Manufacture of carbon fiber fabric

This kind of composite material can be used in parts such as automobile, aircraft, ship and so on. It can lighten the weight and improve the strength and wear resistance of the parts. This is a promising business.

The development of composite materials for aviation industry is made of carbon fiber fabric. Its development is to use Resin Transfer Moulding Technology (RTM Technology).


Since 80s of last century, Russia has successfully developed the thermal shield and the outer edge plate of the blizzard spacecraft by the RTM technology from the Moscow State University of design and technology, the National Aeronautical Technology Research Institute and other units.

In recent years, two units have been working together to turn the carbon fiber fabric into the research and development of civil aircraft parts. The main topics are from three aspects:


1, manufacturing

Exhaust fan blades for dual circuit engines.

Using carbon fiber and glass fiber, woven fabric of different thickness and curvature, the angle changes (warp twist angle 23 degrees) of warp and weft yarn make the fabric have a certain degree of curvature. The multi-layer bending fabric is combined to form the overall bending of the blade, and at the blade root, it has a special "vertical rough base", which is convenient for the blade to be installed on the shaft.

This method is more economical than the original method of dividing the blade into two parts, and improves the stability of the blade preform during impregnation.

The blade surface corresponds to the angle of the blade installation shaft: O degree 45 degrees, 90 degrees.

O degrees accounted for 60-80% of leaf area, + 45 degrees 10-20%, and 90 degrees of 10-20%.

Using automated three-dimensional space design, fabric cutting is made into high-precision blade preform and stored in a vacuum bag (to ensure the accuracy of each component).

In the later stage, the blade preform is put into the die and impregnated by a certain temperature and pressure.

The engine exhaust blades made of RTM technology and carbon fiber and carbon fiber were tested in the central aeronautical hydrodynamics Institute of Russia after no damage detection.


2. Develop the whole block.

The bending shape of the blade is set and reconstructed by the method of topography. The placement and weaving of strips are studied in the three-dimensional space of the blade, and the directional braided layer of the stripes is studied.

The entire blade is woven with uncomplicated equipment. The raw data are sent to the design room to analyze the feasibility of production and application in the future.


3. Develop carbon fiber and glass fabric reinforced aircraft window frames.

There are many round porthole on both sides of the civil jet plane. The common window frames made by other countries are the window frames with chains, which will reduce the strength of the window frames.

The research topic is carbon fiber and glass fiber, diagonal braided, woven into a tubular fabric, coated with reinforced window frame strength.

Because the cross section of the window frame is T, the cylindrical fabric should also be changed in size so as to fit the shape of the window frame.

This research has attracted the attention of five leading aviation industry enterprises in Russia. At present, the Moscow national design and Technology University and the Russian National Aeronautical Technology Research Institute joint stock company are purchasing and improving equipment for trial production.


Two research units and enterprises jointly carry out scientific research and design - experimental work. The research results show that although carbon fiber and fiberglass substitute for precious metals in aviation industry, although the amount of precious metals is somewhat difficult, the weight of parts can be reduced by 30-50%, and the cost can be reduced by 1/2 to 1/3.

In addition, carbon fiber becomes soft material when damaged, it is safer and does not produce dangerous metal fragments.
